A few pieces for Guild Wars 2, a couple I did for when we unveiled PvP at Gamescom.

A few things I did for DnD, a couple of book covers and a dragon poster.

And finally a couple of Magic cards I managed to sneak in.

Also I would like to let people know that I will be doing a couple of demo's in November. The first is another workshop at Kevin Chen's Concept Design Academy. And I'll be taking part in Massive Blacks San Francisco workshop extravaganza. I'll be sure to post more about it as the time grows nearer.

Spectrum 18 award winners were announced last night. My piece "Riven Earth" managed to bring home the gold in the Concept Art category. Check out the Spectrum website and see the other winners and amazing art.

Book Covers

Here's a few book covers I did that have been circling the web. These were done for Tor, and its always great to work with Irene. The books themselves are coming out next year. As always I have the art with and without titles.

This one was done for a short story for Tor.com that is a part of the same series as the one above.

I kinda like The Quantum Thief with the title more then the one I did, the title added some shadows and killed some of the brightness that I don't think I would be able to get away with normally. Also it was a nice change of pace being the rare sci-fi piece.

Here's a work in progress for The Unremembered cover.

Normal set of thumbnails. Everyone picked the last on the right. A quick tweak was needed to see if a castle or mountains in the background would work better.

People liked the mountains more, but I had to change the pose to a different and more peaceful version to better fit the scenario.

Other then the tweaks in the rough stages, the actual book went along kinda well. No big changes, though I do remember changing the light of the tree a bit.

B-T-I-C Workshop Demo

Here's one of the demo's I did in Romania. Showing off my typical work flow from roughs to finish. Also showed how I use my brushes and other photoshop doodads to get the look that I want. I had to touch it up quite a bit since I was painting to the projector and not to the monitor screen, projectors will always be different.

I had the audience decide which one to finish, it ended up being a combination of 2 of them, the figure in the foreground and the giant. I threw both of the them together and got this.

Just got back from my trip to Romania. I was there as one of the artists presenting there for the Behind the Iron Curtain workshop. I had a great time over there and it was a pleasure meeting everyone. I hope all the attendees got a little something from the workshop, it was quite the gathering of artists there. A big thanks to everyone, take care and maybe we'll meet again.

Been a bit busy lately. Just finished my CGMW demo a couple weeks ago, for those of you who got to ask questions and those listened I hope it was of some help to you. Trying to knock off a row of freelance before heading all the way over to Romania for the Behind the Iron Curtain workshop. Super excited to go and meet with both the artists (Stephan Martiniere, Steambot Studios, Mark Goener, Neville Page, Alex Alvarez) and all those who will be attending. Should be a fun time, my boss Daniel been giving me some pointers.

Here's some Guild Wars 2 art that has been shown in some of the montage videos.

Here's the art that I was working on during my Live Q&A session for CGMW. I worked on it some more after and this is what I ended up with.

Couple of art works that I did for previous demos. Mostly showing off "if in doubt, draw dragons" line of thought. Some of you may recognize them, though I worked on them a little bit more after.

Lastly, I am in the "Artist in Residence" section in the recent ImagineFX. Pick it up if you want to read about me at work and to get some explanations of all the crap that is around my work space. Elminster Must Die

A cover of a book that just got released recently. Stars Elminster in his debut 4th edition appearance. I had fun with the cover, never thought I would ever throw that many special effects into one piece though. Guess that's what happens when wizards throw down against one another. Here's another quick look at some process. A hard spot was getting the red orange fire to work on the blue fire in the back. My favorite part is the 3 guys in the back that no one will ever see.

Here's a few process shots. The only notable thing that I really remember is that I had to tone down the birds in shot 3 to 4. AD had to remind me that the final art ends up relatively small, and at that size it looks like his head is exploding.

I will be featured in a series of online Concept Design workshops with (CGMW) CG Master Workshops. I will be doing a Fantasy Illustration workshop on Saturday Sept, 18. The workshop is only $25 and will be streamed and available the entire day for 24hrs. I will also be doing a 1hr live QandA that same day. Carlo Arellano (Insomiac),Nico Marlet (Dreamworks), Anthony Francisco (Project Offset) ,James Paick (Naughty Dog), Patrick Faulwetter (Gotachman), and Peter Han (Trion Network) will also be doing some workshops throughout the month of Sept-Oct.

Chesley Award Nomination

Two pieces of art I did got nominated for a Chesley award. Lothros is in the Best Gaming - Related Category, and Jora is in the Best Product Illustration.

"As you may know, the Chesley, named in honor of Chesley Bonestell, is the only science fiction/fantasy art award voted on by the artists themselves. The Association of Science Fiction and Fantasy Artists has sponsored the Chesleys since 1984"

A Dark Queen

A piece of GW2 concept art that I donated to the BeautifulGrim charity auction that my friend Daarken organized. It is for a good cause and I am honored to have a small part in it.

"My name is Daarken and I am a concept artist and illustrator working for Mythic Entertainment. My friend Leif Jeffers, an animator at DreamWorks, and I are organizing an art auction fundraiser that will be held next year.

Earlier this year my girlfriend, Cat, was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 25. On November 3rd, 2009, she had a bilateral mastectomy after going through 16 weeks of chemotherapy. As you can imagine it has been hard for her, not only mentally and physically, but financially. In order to help alleviate some of her medical bills Leif and I wanted to throw an art auction. The proceeds that are left over after her medical bills have been paid will go to a breast cancer related charity to be determined by the artists in the coming weeks."

A book cover I did for Tor a little while ago. It's coming out next week and the cover has been out on the net for awhile now. I figured I can show some process shots of how it went as well. The over all look that they wanted was a Band of Brothers type line up with a fantasy twist. Mix in a little Russian art for added flavor. I handled the characters on their own in the beginning to nail down attitude and a bit of character. Also have the finished product with type.

And a big thank you for helping out with the contest. We'll see if she can win tomorrow when the contest ends.

Help Needed

A good friend of mine's girlfriend needs some help. Christina Mijung Lee is a Korean American painter and was recently selected as one of 3 finalists to be on the cover of KoreAm, a national Korean American cultural magazine. It goes without saying that this is a big deal for her. Unfortunately, because of a glitch in the system votes from users of Internet Explorer 7 or 8 were not counted for her. She hung onto the lead for a little while but now is behind by a good margin.

If people would be so kind to vote for her on the contest site it would be greatly appreciated.

Here's the demo I did at the recent FuturePoly workshop. I have a few steps and how it actually turned out once I put a couple more hours into it. I would like to thank everyone who made it to the workshop. It is always nice to put faces to people who you've only interacted with online. Hopefully everyone got something out it.

Evolve CG Conference

I will be doing a lecture and demo at this year's Evolve CG conference in Fort Lauderdale, FL. The event will take place on May 15 and 16.

"EvolveCG was specifically created to help students in areas with low-to-zero animation industry presence or access, the opportunity to both learn and observe from some of the best Computer Graphic, and Visual Effects Artist in the world. This event is designed by professionals to provide a purely educational experience for both students and professionals alike."

There is also an art contest being held too. Its called the Hunter Challenge.

"The Hunter challenge asks participants to study and create the ultimate Hunter character/scenario. Is it a human, creature, or not even of this planet? We want to know everything that makes them so effective at tracking their prey. Things like, what type of gear or weaponry they use that enables them to be the best at what they do? Where are their hunting grounds located- is it some far off distant out back planet or a future earth? Etc. Just make sure to depict it all through your work, and in your final piece."

Happy New Year everyone!

I'll be taking part in an art demo on the 23rd. It will be taking place in Bellevue, WA. I'll be joining the likes of Daniel Dociu, Jaime Jones, Richard Anderson and more for a live 5 hour long presentation. This is being done in support for my friend Jason Stokes new school, FuturePoly which focuses on teaching 3d and texture art for video games. You can find more information here. Here's is my cover for Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time eBook release. I worked on The Great Hunt, the second book in the series. It was both a honor and a pleasure to be included in this project. I have been a reading WoT since the seventh grade, and being able to a cover for a book in the series is something I never even dreamed of. Thanks again for Irene for getting me involved with this project.

Here's an illustration I did for my friend Ramses Melendez. He recently just finished his short film "Fantasmagorias". He asked me to do a illustration to be included in a art book that will accompany the film release. The illustration will be a part of the pin-up gallery featuring other artists.

I was reading one of my mythology books, when I remember how epic frost giants are. Need to work on this one some more.

I guess this is fairly old news now, but the Spectrum 16 award winners were announced last week. I managed to get a Silver award in the Concept Art category for my piece "Snow Battle". Also of note, my Art Director Daniel Dociu got the Gold award (again!).
